Inspired by Sheikh Zayed’s belief that history guides the future, the museum explores the values that built the nation. There are over 1,500 objects on display and a collection of 3,000 artefacts held in trust, from ancient and living cultures of the Emirates and the wider region. These pieces offer a profound look at the historical threads that connect the Arab world.
The collection includes manuscripts, archaeological finds, and more. Among Zayed National Museum’s highlights are an 8,000-year-old natural pearl from Marawah Island, a rare Abbasid bronze lamp and a finely carved rock crystal dish, showcasing the artistry and trade networks of the early Islamic world.
Zayed National Museum's architecture draws inspiration from the wing of a falcon in flight. Five towers reinterpret traditional barjeel wind towers, marrying heritage with climate-conscious engineering. Inside, the structure draws on the land’s natural cooling properties, while native plants and a traditional falaj irrigation system in the garden pay homage to Sheikh Zayed’s connection to desert, oasis and urban landscapes.
The museum was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, London.
