You Send Me: Beyond Authorship and interiority

Organised by Warehouse421

This talk will be hosted by Ryan Inouye, which will take Sam Cooke’s 1957 song, 'You Send Me', as a point of departure for thinking through the concept of authorship. Bringing together musical excerpts, critical insight and research into the song’s writing and public reception, the talk takes up this pop single as a thought experiment that delineates the limits of authorship, which is often understood as the privileged expression of the individual subject.

The talk also examines how the song through its lyrics and conditions of creation, invites us to consider itself as part of a wider endeavor to evade a particular model of twentieth-century American life, one that is predicated on investment in the notion of individual will through labour and contract.
