Organised by Warehouse421
The discussion will explore the themes of identity, belonging and exile through Sinan Antoun’s novel 'Ya Maryam', winner of the International Booker Prize. The book navigates issues faced by minorities through a conversation between Yusuf, who refuses to leave Iraq and Maha who is anxiously waiting for her papers to leave the country for good.
The session will explore intergenerational dialogue and the meaning of belonging, with a specific focus on the dynamics of the coveted ‘return’ and migration.
The session will be part of 'Sour Sweet', a programme of readings led by Maryam Wissam Al Dabbagh, that explores readings of poetry and literature of the Arab Diaspora, pertaining to the tensions between the inevitable return and departure and what lies in between.
