Petrostates: The Rise and Fall of OPEC in the 20th Century

Organised by New York University Abu Dhabi Institute

Formed sixty years ago, OPEC was the first international organisation of the Global South. Today the cooperation amongst petrostates is complicated by political divisions, the rise of shale oil, the strength of the climate change agenda and oil exporters' plans to diversify their economies.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is an intergovernmental organisation of 14 nations.

The event speakers will include:

- Giuliano Garavini, Associate Professor of International History, Roma Tre University in Rome; Author of 'The Rise and Fall of OPEC in the 20th Century'
- H.E. Majid Al-Moneef, Former OPEC Governor; Chairman of the International Advisory Committee of King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC)
- Bassam Fattouh, Director of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies
- Robin Mills, CEO of Qamar Energy
