Humans have been looking to the skies for countless generations and the field of astronomy continues to captivate people with curiosity and passion. Now stargazers both young and old in Abu Dhabi have a venue where they can see further, thanks to the Al Sadeem Planetarium And Astronomy Center in Al Wathba.
The facility opened in the summer of 2017 and was born out of the vision of two space enthusiasts – Thabet Al Qaissieh, a successful Emirati businessman and astronomy enthusiast, provided the funding for the observatory, and Alejandro Palado, a resident who originally founded the Abu Dhabi Astronomy Group.
The centre includes an observatory used for observing terrestrial or celestial events and a planetarium, a dome-shaped theatre built for educational and entertaining shows about astronomy. In addition, the facility is available for overnight events, community awareness programmes, and has links to both Abu Dhabi Science Festival and the Mother of the Nation Festival.
A typical visit may last for about 90 minutes but the site is equipped with camping materials, a lavatory, kitchen, training area, and a range of telescopes that can be use for stargazing activities.
