Louvre Abu Dhabi is proud to unveil the Pyxis of Prince Al-Mughira, a masterpiece on loan from the Musée du Louvre’s Islamic Arts Department.

This intricately crafted ivory box, created in the 10th century in the caliphal workshops of Madinat al-Zahra, Cordoba, Spain, represents the pinnacle of Andalusian art and craftsmanship. Previously on display in the permanent galleries of the Musée du Louvre since the early 20th century, the Pyxis of Prince Al-Mughira will be displayed at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The Pyxis of Prince Al-Mughira is showcased in Gallery 9 which has specifically been renovated for the artwork, delivering an immersive and captivating experience. This specially designed setting features a theatrical display, with the Pyxis placed at the center of a 180-degree engaging projection.

The scenography allows visitors to explore the intricate craftsmanship of the Pyxis up close, while era-inspired music by Naseer Shamma, enhances the ambiance, evoking the palatial setting in which the Pyxis originally belonged. Visitors can further engage with the exhibit through visual projections and informative material, available on-site and via the museum app, providing deeper insight into the historical significance of the piece.

The Pyxis of Prince al-Mughira is a true masterpiece of Islamic ivory craftsmanship, showcasing both the recipient's status and the advanced artistry of the time. It was gifted to Prince al-Mughira, half-brother of Caliph al-Hakam II, as indicated by its inscription and dating (967-968 AD).
