Rediscover the voices of community in Abu Dhabi with Sxip Shirey and Coco Karol! This residency tackles the development of an Abu Dhabi specific choral piece called The Gauntlet: Faraway Together., an intimate experience immersing audiences in waves of harmony, poetry, and gesture.
Originally planned as an in-person event during Spring 2020, the piece has been developed online and adapted for a virtual and remote audience to be premiered in March as a one-of-a-kind immersive sonic experience. Additionally, a series of workshops led by the artists provide insight into the work.
The Gauntlet: Faraway Together. first began development last summer. Through Zoom, Coco Karol interviewed 20 diverse members of the Abu Dhabi community, using a self-developed, specialized process of “movement interviews.’‘ Drawing from these interview texts, composer Sxip Shirey writes an original choral score with a libretto drawn from the voices of our community. The NYUAD Choral Ensemble, will then record themselves singing the piece which will be transformed into an immersive, spatially designed sound installation for audience members to experience through headphones.
Through January and February, Coco Karol will lead a series of workshops that explore her embodied inquiry practice, Movement Before Dialogue. Through movement, language, and impulse she establishes a potent connection with her subject and mines personal stories, poetry, and gestures. In late March, Sxip Shirey will be sharing his approach to object-oriented composition through a virtual lecture / demonstration.
Each version of The Gauntlet is composed and staged for its specific location.
