  • Volvo Ocean Race Fleet starts leg 4 to New Zealand
After a recuperative two-week stopover in the southern Hainan province, the six-strong Volvo Ocean Race fleet has started the arduous 5,200 nautical mile leg to Auckland, New Zealand.  Already tipped by many as the most tactically testing leg in the 39,000 nautical mile round-the-world sailing odyssey, the fourth stage is expected to be even more taxing with winds of 40-50 knots greeting the fleet on the first few days – making yacht and sail breakages a very real possibility.

With the fleet having the proverbial bit between its teeth as competitors looked to get much-needed points under their belts before heading off to New Zealand, Saturday’s Sanya Haitang In-Port Race saw Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing powering home to a solid third place finish, as current Volvo Ocean Race leaders, Team Telefonica, extended its margin at the top with a near perfect win.
