The British-born, UAE based, record-breaking adventurer Adrian Hayes will
be joined by Rashed Al Mesafry and Ghafan Mohammed Al Jabry, of the
United Arab Emirates’ Armed Forces, in recreating the adventures of
Wilfred Thesiger, the British explorer who travelled from Salalah in
Oman to Abu Dhabi emirate via the Liwa desert and the oasis city of Al
Ain in the 1940s.
Hayes and his Emirati colleagues will travel by camels and on foot, covering more than 1,500km.
The team
will rely on basic provisions, nature and desert hospitality to survive
the 40-day trek. They will leave Salalah in late October 2011 and aim
to reach Liwa by UAE National Day (December 2), before completing their
journey to Al Ain and finally Abu Dhabi city, the UAE capital, around 9th December 2011.
'Mubarak Bin London' (Wilfred Thesiger), crossed Empty
Quarter (Rub Al Khali) – the world’s largest single sand mass - twice
between 1945 and 1950 with his two companions, Salim bin Kabina and
Salim bin Ghubaisha of the Rawashid tribe. Thesiger’s travels took him
through Abu Dhabi emirate, via the southern oasis of Liwa, through the
capital city, and to Al Ain.
