The five hippos’ new home at Al Ain Zoo resembles their natural habitat. It features an open space with lots of vegetation and a big water pool. To reduce heat impact, the new exhibit has shaded areas and water showers to protect the animals, while allowing the visitors to watch them.
Hippos have been part of the Al Ain Zoo’s family for many years, but have only recently gone on public display.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), hippos are listed in the Red List of Threatened Species as ‘vulnerable’ due to a significant decline in their numbers over the past three decades.
